Interdisciplinary Studies Major

I am not erudite enough to be interdisciplinary,
but I can break rules.

--Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak

Graduation Information

The IDST major has been restructured and is no longer accepting new majors.

However, the newly structured curriculum in Religion and Culture has been proposed and should be approved by Fall 2010. Once approved, students can apply for admission into the new major. Students interested in the new major in Religion and Culture should contact Peter Schmitthenner for further information.

Interdisciplinary Studiesexplore how the natural, artificial, and cultural dimensions of our world fit together. They take perspectives of many disciplines, in order to define new objects of study, and thus search for new ways to surmount obstacles and acheive our goals.

Our curricula emphasize

  • collaboration among traditional disciplines
  • paths of critical inquiry
  • integrative research methods
  • service learning, outreach, and community engagement
  • social justice as defined from diverse perspectives
