Ph.D. in Classics at University of Florida, 2008.

BeckerDr. Trudy Harrington Becker is a Senior Instructor in the Department of Religion and Culture; she is also affiliated faculty in the Classical Studies Program in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, as well as the History Department.  Her research considers historiography, specifically that of ancient Rome, and the multiple forms, theories, and intentions that characterized it; in doing so she seeks to analyze the construction of Roman identity as its historians shaped it.  A current emphasis is the work of the fragmentary historians of the Roman Republic, who wrote in Latin and Greek, prose and poetry, and for diverse audiences.  Work in progress includes an examination of the impact of the watershed Roman battle of Numantia (133 BCE) on the historians who both participated in it and wrote of it.

A graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Florida, she teaches courses such as The Roman World and Early Christianity, The Classical Age of Greece, Ancient Mediterranean History Survey (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome), History of Greek and Roman Women, and Alexander the Great.
