Warren W. Hobbie Scholarship in Religious Studies
Virginia Tech students who are pursuing a minor in Religious Studies or a Religious Studies degree option in IDST (IDRS) are eligible for this competitive, endowed scholarship. Usually two $1000 scholarships are awarded annually. In 2009, complete applications will be due Friday, October 30 at 5:00 p.m., and awards will be made by the beginning of November.
In addition to information about your major, minor, projected graduation date, and GPA, the application calls for a copy of your Virginia Tech transcript and a computer-printed essay of two double-spaced pages in which you relate how your classes in Religious Studies have transformed your thinking and influenced your approach to life-long learning. You should also submit a piece of written work from a Religious Studies class. Select a paper that you feel best represents what you have learned from studying religion. There is no length or subject requirement.
Successful candidates will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, overall and in Religious Studies classes, and will have completed at least two Religious Studies classes. Candidates who wish to use the scholarship to offset expenses for travel abroad are particularly encouraged to apply (if this is the case, please state this in the essay). Applicants must have on file with the Office of University Scholarships and Financial Aid a FAFSA application that shows financial need. However, please note that having a FAFSA application on file does not guarantee you will be eligible for any need-based aid.
You must request an official copy of your transcript from the Registrar's Office, 250 Student Services Building or online at http://www.registrar.vt.edu/recores/request_transcript.php. It may take from three to five business days to process your request, so plan ahead on this. Request a "signed and sealed" copy and turn it in (still sealed) with your scholarship application materials.
